Hostess Ding Dongs are chocolate cakes with creamy fillings and although they are not “technically” considered candy, they occupy a unique place in the history of snack food. They were first introduced by Hostess in 1967 and were marketed exclusively on the East Coast in order not to compete with an all but identical product called Ring Dings manufactured by Drakes Cakes.

In 1987, the Hostess and Drakes Cakes enjoyed a short lived partnership and Ding Dongs received nationwide exposure. Unfortunately, the partnership dissolved and, once again, Hostess was forbidden to use the name Ding Dongs in areas where Ring Dings were available and this continued until 1998 when Interstates Bakery purchased Drakes and retired Ring Dings.
