The first vending machine was invented in 251 BC, when the Greek mathematician Hero of Alexandria invented a mechanism for Egyptian temples that dispensed holy water after visitors dropped in a coin. In the 1880s, the first modern coin-operated systems were introduced to London and New York City, but it wasnt until 1907 that the best vending machine of all came into existence — the gumball machine!
